The International Journal of Badiou Studies

The International Journal for Badiou Studies is an international, peer-reviewed, open-source journal dedicated to the philosophy and thought of, and surrounding, the French philosopher Alain Badiou. The IJBS is dedicated to original and critical arguments that directly engage with the works of Badiou, as well as pertinent intellectual colleagues and related concepts. The aim of the IJBS is to develop a clear and transparent site for scholars interested in his ideas to come together from around the world to share their research and develop productive dialogues.

The IJBS is particularly concerned with maintaining a fidelity to Badiou's thinking without collapsing into hagiography or celebrity fetishism. We therefore encourage papers that actively critique Badiou's currency as an established philosophical figure. In this, we share similar aspirations to our partner the International Journal of Žižek Studies. Badiou's engagement with a variety of different fields also demands an interdisciplinary forum. Thus, the editorial staff and board is formed of scholars from a variety of disciplines across the Humanities and the Sciences.

The IJBS is designed to be a forum for discussion and debate. Readers are encouraged to register with the IJBS: Notes and Queries, where conversation threads include responses to papers published in the IJBS, queries on issues raised by Badiou, and short notes on current thoughts and activities of members on or related to Badiou’s work, including notes from reading groups, seminars, lectures and online debates.

Join the IJBS Facebook group for updates, announcements and links to related to Badiou’s current work.

Call For Papers: The Dialectic

You could almost say my entire enterprise is one giant confrontation [démêlé] with the dialectic.

-       Alain Badiou

The second issue of The International Journal of Badiou Studies will be dedicated to the dialectic. What are the consequences of the dialectic for Badiou’s thought? What are the consequences of Badiou’s thought on dialectics? The editors are soliciting papers that interrogate the dialectic in Badiou’s thought and the implications of this thinking to disciplines across the humanities and the sciences. Although our interest is in keeping the ambit for response as wide as possible, it would be particularly interesting to consider:

  • The relationship between materialist dialectics and dialectical materialism.
  • The development of dialectics from the 19th century to the 21st century.
  • The development of dialectics in Badiou’s work from Théorie de la contradiction and Théorie du sujet to Logiques des Mondes and the Circonstances.
  • The relationship between the dialectical, the non-dialectical and disjunctive synthesis to Badiou’s reading of Le Siècle. What are the consequences for our own ‘Circumstances’?
  • How are we to define the term dialectics in the wake of Badiou’s work?

We welcome articles that examine the conditions of Badiou’s thought, and papers that use Badiou’s thought as a springboard for considering the circumstances – whether scientific, amorous, political or artistic – in which we live.

Prospective articles should be in the range of 6,000-8,000 words, prepared for blind review, and accompanied by an abstract of not more than 250 words. Full articles should be sent by the 31st of March 2013. Authors should follow the standard guidelines for online submission.

In line with the ethos of the IJBS, we will accept articles in supported world languages, although an English abstract is required for all submissions.

Access & Use

IJBS is an open access journal. This means that all IJBS content is available to any reader or institution without cost or subscription. The journal does, however, incorporate a registration option. This list will also allow the journal to claim a certain level of support or readership. In all cases, registration information will only be used for the purpose of IJBS business. Author and reader information will not be traded, sold, or otherwise distributed. Please see the journal's Privacy Statement which assures readers that their name and email address will not be used for any other purposes.

Translation Initiative Non-English language content will be provided as an important part of IJBS's aim to be a meaningfully international journal. We aim not only to publish articles originating in languages other than English but also to translate journal content into as many languages as is practical. For this reason any interested groups or individuals willing to help in this translation initiative are cordially invited to contact the editor. All contributions will be fully acknowledged and accredited in IJBS.

New publication date

Dear readers of IJBS,

We the editors have decided to publish the next edition of IJBS in June 2013.  The reason for this change in publication format is twofold.  First, there is much happening in Badiou studies this Spring and we want to produce an edition that will be able to capture and engage properly that activity.  Second, in December we'll be publishing an Italian edition of IJBS, and we are hoping that the publication of a non-English version in December will become an annual tradition.

Thank you all for your support, and please let us know if you have suggestions, questions or of course, complaints.

Best regards,

The Editors
